Edited by Alberta Campitelli, the book Vignanello: Il castello, la sua terra, la sua storia, i suoi giardini is a thrilling journey through the history, architecture and landscape of Castello Ruspoli and the hamlet of Viganello.
Located in the Tuscia region of Lazio, this castle is a singular example of the transformation of a medieval fortress into an aristocratic dwelling, complete with one of the best-preserved gardens in Italy. The book explores the fief’s complex historical vicissitudes, from its foundation in 1531 under the Farnese family, passing through the hands of the Orsini and the Marescotti to the Ruspoli family, who still owns it today. Special attention is devoted to the formal garden, built by Ottavia Orsini in the 17th century, and to the boxwood parterre.
The book also examines the relationship between the castle and the hamlet, highlighting the urban and architectural transformations that made Viganello a splendid baroque town.
Among the other themes addressed are the recent renovation of the gardens, which has allowed to complex to return to its former magnificence while improving accessibility and public enjoyment, as well as figures associated with the site, such as composer Georg Friedrich Händel – who stayed in 1707 – and Saint Giacinta Marescotti, who was born in the castle and closely linked to the family garden and estate.
Supported by an extensive visual apparatus, the book pays homage to the history, culture and beauty of Viganello, a place that continues to charm visitors to this day.
