Milan relives a centuries-old history described in all its facets, from its legendary foundation by the Celts to the threshold of the third millennium.
Retracing the political, cultural, religious and artistic history of Milan via its five thousand entries, this volume aims to relate the many faces and different aspects of the city: undisputed communications capital, leading player in the worlds of finance and fashion, centre for arts and sports, industries and music. The image of a wealthy city brimming with ideas emerges side by side with its troubled history and snapshots of a lost city, with its Navigli connecting quiet aristocratic palazzi and noisy case di ringhiera (once popular housing). The texts are accompanied by a vast iconography which makes up an encyclopedia within the encyclopedia – for example, the first posters for the high-end La Rinascente department store, portraits of the city’s rulers, Tiepolo’s frescoes in Palazzo Isimbardi, the covers of La Domenica del Corriere, 19th-century vedute and incredibly beautiful sights.
