In July 1880, while convalescing in Braemar due to health issues, thirty-year-old Robert Louis Stevenson, prompted by the insistent requests of his thirteen-year-old stepson Lloyd Osbourne, began to tell a tale of pirates and buried treasure, starting from a map he had drawn for Lloyd. The story flowed so effortlessly that Stevenson decided to put it into writing. Until then, he had written short stories, essays and poetry, but had never attempted a novel. In his hands, this adventure for boys evolved astonishingly into an epic reflection on the ambiguity of moral values and the double-edged nature of the human soul.
Treasure Island was chosen to inaugurate the Dédale series for its enduring power and appeal. The text is accompanied by previously unpublished illustrations by French graphic novelist and artist David B., enriched by a preface by celebrated author Alberto Manguel and followed by an introduction by Léonard Puoy focusing on the cultural meaning of treasure.
