This book includes a selection of projects and plans by Majorcan architect Antonio Obrador, aiming for an approach that is sensitive to and respectful of the island’s landscape.
An architect born and raised on Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, Antonio Obrador became interested in the world of architecture and design early on, establishing his own studio in 1980 and carrying out a large number of projects throughout the stages of his career. His work draws a deep-rooted inspiration from the island's human history, built-up heritage and natural landscapes. The projects featured in the book, both those involving the restoration of existing buildings and those conceived as new constructions, could be described as genuine ‘declarations of love’ by a Majorcan for Majorca. They are all the more meaningful within the context of decades marked by intensive property development and the interplay of foreign interests and capital on the island.
Photographs of Obrador's work – including Cap Rocat, a former fortress restored and converted into a hotel; a Music Park currently under construction; hotels, museums and historic buildings in the centre of Las Palmas; and country houses nestled in the landscape – are presented alongside texts introducing the buildings, tracing their histories and illustrating the origins, inspirations and development of the projects, as well as the thought behind them.
