Portrait of a gentleman

Jeanne Etienne Liotard
(1702-1789)
18th century
Pastel on parchment

This elegant pastel portrait, executed by the renowned painter Liotard, shows a gentleman, half and three-quarter bust, looking at the spectator. He is wearing a simple green suit, which stands out against the grey-brown background. On his head he is wearing a powdered wig.

Liotard used pastels in a rather unusual way, spreading them out in a “flatter” way on the surface instead of shading them. The result achieved was very different, more sober and very elegant.
